Dalglish happy with Spearing's attitude 

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish will welcome Jay Spearing back into his squad after suspension by telling the combative midfielder not to change his game. The 23-year-old was sent off against Fulham earlier this month after he cleanly won the ball in a tackle with Moussa Dembele but caught the forward with an exaggerated follow-through. His sending-off provoked a furious response from his team-mates and landed the club with a Football Association misconduct charge for failing to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion. Spearing's return adds greater defensive stability to the squad in the season-long absence of Lucas Leiva, who has been sidelined after cruciate knee surgery. 

Dalglish is delighted to have the academy graduate's combative qualities at his disposal again and sees no reason for the player to tone down his approach. "There was no maliciousness in his tackle. He was totally focused on winning the ball," said the Scot ahead of the Boxing Day visit of bottom-side Blackburn. "He did win the ball but his momentum came through and made contact with Dembele. "It was maybe over-enthusiasm but that is not something you'd complain about in football - at that age you'd expect him to be. "I'm sure he'll be more knowledgeable for his experience but there is nothing he needs to change greatly. "Everybody's character is different but character is what makes you successful - and the wee man has certainly been successful here. "We don't intend - or need to - change the boy's character. He just needs to be a bit more mature and I'm sure the three games (suspension) has taught him that." Dalglish said, with a packed festive programme ahead, Spearing's enforced rest may turn out to be a positive as he looks to rotate the squad. "It was disappointing to lose him because he was doing really well," said the Reds boss. "He's served his punishment and maybe that's an advantage with the games coming quite quickly. "But he's got nothing to prove to us - we know what Jay can do, we know what he's about and he's done very well for us in the past. "There is no reason to think he's not going to do well in the future." Dalglish, his coaching team and the club's medical staff will keep a watchful eye on the players as they prepare for a run of nine matches in 36 days up until the end of January. But the manager will not be looking beyond Monday's fixture as he looks for the side to get back to winning ways after a goalless draw at Wigan on Wednesday. "Every game is a pivotal point and for us it's important we get as much as we can from every game, whether that comes within three days or 10 days of each other doesn't make any difference," he said. "We have a busy schedule of games which demands a very strong squad and I think we've got that."

Blackburn boss Steve Kean is confident under-fire owners Venky's will provide the money for much-needed defensive reinforcements in the January transfer window. Many people expected conversations between executives of the Indian company and their manager this week to centre around Kean's position, but not so according to the man himself. Instead, the Scot presented his list of transfer targets to help relieve an injury crisis that has robbed him of Ryan Nelsen, Scott Dann, Martin Olsson and Gael Givet, while goalkeeper Paul Robinson is also a doubt for the clash at Liverpool. Weakness in defence has been at the centre of Blackburn's struggles and they have failed to keep a clean sheet all season, shipping 38 goals in 17 games. "We spoke about the transfer window and the need to get defenders in and just where we are," said Kean. "It was a very positive conversation. It wasn't a case where there was just positions discussed, it was names. "I told them I think we can get these players and let's push on and get them in the early part of the window so we can have a good amount of bodies and good competition for places once the other lads get out of the treatment room. "We talk about what I feel is the most important things. The conversations have mostly been about players' health and players coming in." Although Liverpool are unbeaten at home this season, they have drawn five of their eight matches, including against Swansea and Norwich, and Kean sees no reason why Blackburn cannot follow suit. He said: "It will be a really big ask for us to get something, but why not? Other teams have gone there this season not expecting to get anything and have come away with something, so there is a possibility to get a result."

Midfielder Charlie Adam has no qualms about taking Liverpool's next penalty despite squandering the spot-kick which saw his side lose ground on the Barclays Premier League's top five.

Having created a number of chances against Wigan on Wednesday night, Gary Caldwell's handball gave the Reds the perfect opportunity to break the deadlock just after half-time.

But Liverpool's penalty curse continued as Adam, who has scored the team's only effort from 12 yards at West Brom in October, made it four failures in five attempts with goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi saving. "I never thought I made a good connection with the penalty and the keeper made a good save but I'm disappointed I didn't score," Adam said.

The Scotland midfielder has now joined Luis Suarez, Dirk Kuyt and Andy Carroll in having missed from the spot this season, but that will not stop him stepping up for the next one.

He added: "I scored the last one I took and was confident but I missed it. But if the opportunity comes around again I will be there to try to take another one."

Manager Kenny Dalglish tried to remain positive after the Reds saw another golden opportunity slip through their fingers.

"We will keep getting in there and if we keep getting penalties someone will step up to the plate and take them," he said. "That is four misses now; it is not pleasant or deliberate but great credit to the boys for continuing to get in there."

Missing chances, not just from the spot, has been Liverpool's problem all season as they have hit the frame of the goal 16 times and scored just 20 goals in 17 Premier League matches. Wigan was just another example of that but Adam stressed they had to forget about past matches and concentrate on what was ahead.

"We probably should have killed the game off (at Wigan) but it is one of those things and is difficult to take but we move on to Boxing Day (at home to Blackburn) now," the Scot said. "It is disappointing that the amount of ball we had we didn't capitalise on it but fair play to Wigan they did well and we are disappointed we didn't get three points.

"We want to try to win every game but sometimes in this league it doesn't happen like that but once you suffer a disappointing result it is how you react. It will be two difficult games (Blackburn and Newcastle at home) coming up but there are a lot of games over the Christmas period and we are looking forward to it."

Dalglish: Actions caused no trouble

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish maintains the club's support of Luis Suarez has been right and proper and has not 'caused trouble'.

The Reds came in for criticism for their strongly-worded statement in the wake of the Uruguay international's eight-match ban imposed for using insulting words towards Patrice Evra, with a reference to the Manchester United player's skin colour.

However, when the players issued their statement prior to Wednesday's goalless draw at Wigan and wore T-shirts in the warm-up depicting an image of Suarez with his name and number seven on the back there was further outcry. ""The statement couldn't have caused anyone any trouble," the Scot said.

Dalglish added: "I don't think the players have caused any trouble with the FA either by their statement or support by their T-shirts. If we are not in any trouble we will leave it at that before we do get in any trouble."

Dalglish said Suarez had been moved by the show of support from the club and his team-mates

"He's been quite emotional and very grateful," added the Reds boss. "I don't think it is ever a disappointment when the people you work for give you their undivided support and I think that is the least he deserves."

Liverpool are still awaiting the full written verdict of the independent commission who heard Suarez's case but are not expected to receive it until after Christmas. The moment it does arrive the club will have 14 days to consider their response and appeal if they choose, otherwise the suspension will kick in.

Dalglish, aware of how much debate was taking place about the case and the anticipated production of the written summary, said it was a matter of being patient.

"Whenever it is ready," was his reply when asked when he expected to receive the documentation. "Most of the people have had their say, we've had our say but we will wait for the judgement and take it from there - but it won't be tomorrow (Saturday).

"The club have issued the statement, the players have issued their statement visually and verbally, but we have to wait for the written report because no-one knows [what it contains]. At this moment in time I don't think the club are permitted to go into any further detail than they have done."

Dalglish: Reds should have won

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish could not criticise the performance of his side after they were held to a frustrating goalless draw away at Wigan.

The focus on striker Luis Suarez, who received an eight-match ban on Tuesday after being found guilty of misconduct for using insulting words to Patrice Evra which included a reference to the Manchester United defender's colour, deflected from what was an entertaining game in which Charlie Adam missed a 50th-minute penalty.

"We were not disappointed with the performance but were disappointed with not coming away with three points," said Dalglish.

"We started really well for 20 minutes but they got back into it.

"We made a few chances and so did they. We would love to put them all away with a higher percentage than we do but it was a hard-fought draw."

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez was delighted with a second successive draw at home to a 'big' club, having held Chelsea at the weekend.

"When you are playing against sides of the quality of Liverpool or Chelsea you want to see your team performing well," he said.

"We are not expected to win these games but after the first 15 minutes we stretched the game and created our own chances.

"It would have been catastrophic to have lost that game."

PFA back strong statement on racism

Luis Suarez's eight-match ban for racially abusing Patrice Evra is a strong statement that racism will not be tolerated, players chief Gordon Taylor has said.

Liverpool striker Suarez is expected to appeal - the Uruguay international's defence was that due to cultural differences he was unaware that language acceptable in his country was viewed as racist in Europe. Liverpool have reacted with fury at the punishment for the 24-year-old, who was also fined £40,000, which was imposed by an FA independent regulatory commission.

"This was an independent commission experienced in law and football and they must have had compelling evidence, and it sends out a very strong message to the rest of the world," said Taylor.

"I understand the point about cultural differences but if you come to this country all players have to abide by not just the laws of the game but the laws of the land as well.

"Referring to someone's skin colour has got to be offensive - it's self-evident.

"No one can say the FA have ducked this issue and bearing in mind outcry in this country over Sepp Blatter's remarks it sends out an important message.

"This is a timely reminder that the FA, the PFA and the clubs to continue education programmes particularly for players coming from abroad that it is never right to make reference to a person's skin colour or nationality."

Taylor said the high-profile nature of the issue, with two of the biggest clubs in the world, would reinforce the message.

He added: "This is a situation involving two of our biggest clubs and a very sensitive time and it reiterates the message we want to get out. We are a multicultural society and a cosmopolitan league and players must have equal respect for people regardless of their nationality or skin colour.

"You can understand Liverpool being upset as they are a top quality club with a top quality manager but perhaps it is a timely reminder that players new to this country need to be advised about what is unacceptable."

No conclusion before Tuesday

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez will have to wait until Tuesday at the earliest to discover if allegations he racially abused Manchester United defender Patrice Evra have been proved.

The Uruguay international, charged by the Football Association with abusing the Manchester United defender and referring to his "ethnic origin and/or colour and/or race", has faced a disciplinary hearing this week.

Suarez has always denied the allegations levelled against him by Evra after the 1-1 draw between the sides at Anfield on October 15, with formal proceedings in front of an independent three-man panel having started on Wednesday.

The FA announced on Friday there would be no announcement on the case before Tuesday, December 20 at the earliest.

Fulham manager Martin Jol has revealed he would be shocked if the charges against Suarez were proved.

Jol worked with Suarez over an 18-month period during his time as Ajax manager and would be taken aback if the charges against the 24-year-old are found proved.

"If it is true, I certainly am [surprised]," the Dutchman said. "At Ajax we had players from all over the world, with all the continents involved and he was good with them all.

"He was my captain and you can imagine I told him it was his job to make them feel comfortable.

"He didn't speak a lot of Dutch but he did it in his way and for me he was a real leader.

"A real leader would never do things like that. If it is true, I can't believe it."

On the road this season the Reds have picked up four wins, including important results against top-four rivals Arsenal and Chelsea. At Anfield, where they are expected to be stronger, they have registered only three wins, although five draws means the points tally is slightly greater.

"Our away form has been really impressive. We have picked up more wins away from home but it doesn't necessarily say we are playing any better," said the Reds boss, who takes his side to Aston Villa on Sunday looking to avenge the 1-0 defeat on the final day of the season in his 350th match in charge of Liverpool.

"At home we are playing well but we are not getting the results the performances deserve.

"If you judge it on wins then, yes, away from home we have been better because we've got more but I've not been disappointed with the performances at home.

"I think the only stat that isn't in our favour is probably in the 'goals for' column which has resulted in fewer points than the performances have deserved.

"We've got that in our own hands and we'll just continue to do what we've done and sooner or later we'll turn our chances into goals.

"We'll just keep going like we have done before in terms of how we express ourselves.

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez may have to wait until Friday to discover whether his defence against a racism charge has been successful after the second day of a disciplinary hearing.

Proceedings against the Uruguay international began on Wednesday in front of an independent three-man panel but, although more aspects of the case were heard on Thursday, Press Association Sport understands no decision is imminent.

The 24-year-old has been charged with abusing Manchester United's Patrice Evra, and referring to his "ethnic origin and/or colour and/or race" by the Football Association.

Suarez has always denied the allegations levelled against him by the France defender and the player and his club were hoping to successfully make a case for his defence at the two-day hearing.

Manager Kenny Dalglish has given the Uruguay international his full support since the complaint was made back in October. And he did not waver from that stance when asked about the case at his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday's Barclays Premier League match at Aston Villa.

"We are standing right beside him and helping him as much as we possibly can," said the Scot, who would not comment on reports he planned to appear in person at Suarez's hearing. "We have said many times before we cannot say anything which will be prejudicial. After it's finished there is a chance to have a conversation.

"As I said last week the FA should have given you (the media) the information when everything was happening, not us."

Evra made his allegations about Suarez immediately after the match at Anfield on October 15, telling French TV station Canal Plus the South American had used a racist insult to him "at least 10 times".

If Suarez, who has always denied the allegations, is found guilty he could be banned or fined, or both. Evra said: "There are cameras. You can see him (Suarez) say a certain word to me at least 10 times."

Both players spoke to FA officials during the investigation and there have been suggestions Suarez was unaware language that is acceptable in Uruguay is viewed as racist in Europe.

If Liverpool wins all four remaining games – they will finish with one more point than they amassed last May.

Newcastle has had nine managers in the 13 years since Dalglish left – handing P45s to Sir Bobby Robson, Graeme Souness, Sam Allardyce, Kevin Keegan, Chris Hughton and Shearer.

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish feels that Andy Carroll's two goals against Manchester City are a hint of things to come. The England striker scored his first two goals for the Reds since his January transfer £35million move from Newcastle in an impressive 3-0 win at Anfield.

His first, a scorching 25-yard drive, was an emphatic statement of his potential as he showed that he is almost fully recovered from the thigh injury he was carrying upon his move to Merseyside.

Carroll replaced Fernando Torres, following the Spaniard's £50million move to Chelsea, the 22-year-old scored after six games compared to Torres, who scored his first goal for Chelsea this weekend.

Dalglish played down the importance of Carroll managing to break his duck however, and that he always knew the goals would come once the player came back to full fitness.

"It wasn't of paramount importance he scored - we put him back in a bit earlier than we probably should have, but obviously he was medically okay," he said.

"He just needed match practice and it was going to take him a few games to get up to that.

"He scored the other night but that is not his fitness complete, and it is not his career complete at Liverpool.

"It was just a stepping stone to go forward and produce more goals for us."

Carroll's double came in only his fourth start for the club, linking up with fellow new-boy Luis Suarez.

Suarez has also played well since moving from Ajax in January - scoring two goals since his arrival.

"Sometimes it takes a little time to settle down but both Andy and Luis have been brilliant," Dalglish continued.

Andy Carroll's Car Torched

A suspect was arrested yesterday on suspicion of setting fire to Liverpool FC star Andy Carroll’s car.

The blaze wrecked the £150,000 customized Range Rover outside Newcastle United captain Kevin Nolan’s home. The fire was so fierce it burnt off the paint and bent the alloy wheels.

Carroll, 22, had purchased the car to celebrate signing a £30,000-a-week deal with Newcastle

He moved to Liverpool in the winter transfer window for a British record of £35million.

Andy Carroll was sent to live with his club captain, Kevin Nolan, in an attempt to keep him out of trouble off the pitch.

He and Nolan looked out the window to see Carroll's new luxury Range Rover go up in flames. The chrome-plated car, bought after Carroll recently signed a lucrative new five-year contract with the Premier League club, was badly damaged.

Andy Carroll Fit to Play for Liverpool and England

Andy Carroll scored the only goal for Arsenal in their 1-1 draw against Ghana.

After being on the sidelines most of 2011, Carroll is confident he is fit and ready to make a winning difference for England.

Carroll started his second game for England National Team, after making his debut against France earlier in the year.

Fabio Capello opted for a new-look 4-3-3 line-up against Ghana. When asked about the new formation, Carroll said he liked it.

"I enjoyed playing there, I got great service and the lads did great," he said.

"It was great to get playing again and get the goal. It was great for me to score another goal. The lads did well, it was disappointing for them to score in the last minute."

"Obviously I am," when asked whether he was ready to prove himself for Capello.

"I’m coming back fit now, getting a goal there has proved that I’m here and I’m ready to score goals if I’m picked."

Dirk Kuyt Believes Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez Are Great Assets to Liverpool

In a recent interview after Liverpool's 2-0 win over Sunderland, Dirk Kuyt said he is optomistic about Liverpools future with recent additions of January transfers Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez. Kuyt believes the partnership between the two will be a successful one for his side and that Andy Carroll's first Liverpool goal is "just a matter of time".

Kenny Dalglish's side left the Stadium of Light with all three points on Sunday.

"They both played well - Luis scored a great goal and Andy was unlucky not to get one," he said/

"Andy is a very talented player and it's just a matter of time before he knocks in the goals.

"Without scoring he's very important for us.

"We knew what Andy could do from playing against him earlier in the season.

"He's very strong in the air and also holds the ball up, together with Suarez he was a real threat today.

"Suarez is always hunting for a goal from every position in the box. I've seen him make a lot of goals like his one today.

"It's very enjoyable to have a player who is creative like that and can score from every position."

Liverpool Moves Up the Premier League Table Under King Kenny Dalglish

John W Henry, Liverpool owner, declined to comment about Kenny Dalglish's future with the club, but said the Scot was doing "very well" after watching the Reds fight for their 2-0 victory against Sunderland yesterday. Dirk Kuyt's controversial penalty and a superb Luis Suarez goal clinched the win for Liverpool.

Dalglish took over Liverpool's management in January replacing Roy Hodgson until the end of the season.

Henry did not go into details regarding Dalglish being hired on a permanent basis, saying that was not 'the Liverpool way'.

"What is going on in that regard is private. It is something called 'the Liverpool way' and you do these things behind closed doors.

"I am not going to talk about these things. He has done very well."

Asked if there has been a change in mood since Dalglish took over the reins, Henry resonded "Absolutely, it's all very positive."

Under Dalglish, the Reds have taken their tally to 20 points from 10 league games with yesterday's win, leaving them four points behind fifth-placed Tottenham.

"As regards the job, I have seen in the papers I have asked for four years. Well, I don't know who I asked. I saw that I was offered two - I don't know who sent that in," said Dalglish.

"Somebody said have I spoken to the owners - of course you speak to the owners, you speak to them regularly during the week. It's their club and they are fantastic owners and they are very supportive owners.

"But there have been no detailed discussions about next season, so until there is something that's to be said, we cannot make it up."

He added: "We are working on the future. We will have to have a lot of days like today to do that (finish fifth). This was a big three points, because this is a tough place."

The Reds are four points behind Tottenham but have played a game more.

Dirk Kuyt's penalty set the Merseysiders on their way to victory yesterday as they cemented their sixth place in the Premier League table under temporary boss Kenny Dalglish.

Liverpool owner John Henry declined to comment about the future of Scottish manager Dalglish but said he was doing "very well" after watching the Reds win 2-0 against Sunderland yesterday.

When asked about a new permanent contract between Liverpool and Dalglish, Henry said, "What is going on in that regard is private. It is something called 'the Liverpool way' and you do these things behind closed doors.

"I am not going to talk about these things. He has done very well."

Liverpool closed in on fifth-place Tottenham Hotspurs with a 2-0 victory against Sunderland on Sunday at the Stadium of Light.

Liverpool’s Dirk Kuyt scored a controversial penalty in the 34th minute.

Video replays later showed Jay Spearing was fouled outside the box by John Mensah but the assistant referee awarded a penalty.

“There was a bit of dispute over whether the foul occurred inside or outside the box,” Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish said.

“From where we are, I couldn’t honestly tell you but if we have got a fortuitous one, then we have got a fortuitous decision in that instance.

“Overall, it was a great effort from our players.”

A stunning solo effort from Uruguay striker Luis Suarez in the 77th minute clinched the three points for Liverpool,

Mensah was given a straight red card for hauling down Suarez.

The Reds are four points behind Tottenham but have played a game more.
