Euro 2012 - Germany Ranks Third in FIFA - Leads Group A
Miroslav Klose, German National Team
Miroslav Klose is a backup striker at Bayern Munich, but he may get the nod ahead of superstar striker Mario Gomez for Germany's upcoming clashes.
Mario Gomez is Bayern's leading scorer with 30 goals in 38 games this season. Klose has one goal for Bayern this season.
"Mario used his chance very well. There is no reason to put him doubt in the club," said Klose. "But that's how it is for me in the national team."
Klose is getting closer to Gerd Mueller's top scoring record for Germany, With 59 goals in 106 games for Germany, Klose is nine goals short of Mueller's record.
He may cut the gap again when Germany plays Kazakhstan tomorrow in Germany's qualifying match for the 2012 European Championship in Poland and Ukraine.
"The record is my big target. Maybe it will come at the European Championship," Klose said.
Germany has hopes of winning the 2014 World Cup in Brazil - as they prepare for their upcoming matches.
They are is ranked third in the FIFA rankings behind Spain and the Netherlands and ahead of Argentina, Brazil and England as of March 2011.
And Germany leads Group A with four wins from four games and anything but a comfortable victory in Kaiserslautern would be a major surprise. Kazakhstan hasn't scored a goal or earned a point in qualifying so far.
Mario Gomez is optomistic about victory and accepts his fate with Germany.
"With all due respect for Kazakhstan, winning this game shouldn't be a problem for us," Gomez said.
"He just happens to have an excellent record in the national team," Gomez said. "As long as he keeps scoring so many goals, I can understand that the coach has no reason to change anything. But I know that I will score many more goals for Germany, I just don't know when," Gomez said.
On Friday, Loew confirmed that Klose will be on the Germany team - probably starting.
"Although he is not playing much for Bayern, he keeps scoring for the national team, as he did against Italy, Loew said.
Klose will return to Kaiserslautern, where he was playing club football when his international career began 10 years ago.
"It's a sellout. I probably sold half the tickets," Klose joked. "It will be a good atmosphere."
At 32, Klose is the veteran in Loew's young team that reached the semifinals of the World Cup in South Africa last year before losing to Spain 1-0.
Loew has dropped six of the 2010 World Cup players from his squad for the Kazakhstan match and for the friendly against Australia on Tuesday.
Germany without goalkeeper Rene Adler due to injury.
Midfielder Sven Bender, who plays for Bundesliga leader Borussia Dortmund, is the only newcomer to the group.
"My players are very concentrated on this match, although Kazakhstan is not on the same level as Italy," Loew said. "We want to win the game, but I also told my players that I'd like to see the same kind of dynamic football we played at the World Cup."
