In front of a sold-out stadium of fans from around the workd, Manchester City earned a shocking 6-1 defeat of their arch-rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, October 23rd, 2011.
After a somewhat slow start, Man City took the lead after 22 minutes with a goal from 21-year old Italian Mario Balotelli. The midfielder marked the goal with humor by lifting his outer shirt to reveal another blue shirt saying, “Why Always Me?”
City was ahead 1-0 at half-time.

Star of the match, Balotelli struck twice. Balotelli also won the free-kick which led to a red card for United defender Jonny Evans leaving United with only ten men. Two goals came from late sub Edin Dzeko. And Sergio Aguero and David Silva each added to the tally.
City boss, Roberto Mancini took off Balotelli with 20 minutes remaining and brought in Edin Dzeko.
City upped their tempo and struck three times after the 88th minute cementing their victory that lifted them five points ahead of United at the top of the Premier League table.
Darren Fletcher scored United’s only goal 10 minutes from time.
City delivered United’s first home defeat since April 2010 – and ended United’s run of 19 consecutive home league wins.
Sir Alex Ferguson said later that the stunning defeat to Manchester City was shocking to him.
United played the majority of the second half with ten men after the dismissal of Jonny Evans.
‘It was out worst ever day. It’s the worst result in my history, ever. Even as a player I don’t think I ever lost 6-1’.
‘I thought with the experience we’ve got – Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra – they would defend more but we just kept attacking. Sometimes there has to be common sense about it’.
Roberto Mancini, City manager, also commented after the match.
“This is only one game. I still think United are one yard above us, still,” said Mancini. “I think we can only change this after we win the title in the end.
“After, maybe it will be different, but now United are better than us.”
The 161st derby, a Premier League fixture, took place on 23 October 2011 at Old Trafford. City’s victory equalized the biggest win in the derby’s history, which City also won at Old Trafford in 1926.
Manchester United won the 2010-11 Premier League Championship and Manchester City earned the 2010-11 FA Cup Trophy.
Both clubs qualified for the 2011–12 UEFA Champions League.
The Manchester Derby is a historic clash between Manchester City and Manchester United. The local derby centres on the City of Manchester and Greater Manchester. Only four miles separate the clubs with City based in east Manchester at the City of Manchester Stadium and United south west of Manchester at Old Trafford Stadium in Trafford.

The last meeting, the 161st derby, was a Premier League fixture on 23 October 2011 at Old Trafford. City won 6-1, equalling the biggest win in the derby’s history, which City also won 6-1 at Old Trafford in 1926.

Her reported former lover Ryan Giggs has also flown back to Britain together with his wife. The two are said to be pursuing marriage counselling in an effort to rebuild their relationship.

Both 22-year old Brazilians are right-footed and play the same right-back position for Manchester United in rotation.
“I’ve got some marks on my face that Fabio hasn’t,’’ said Rafael da Silva.
Either twin may fill the right-back slot in Saturday’s Champions League final against Barcelona at Wembley Stadium.
“My brother has been playing quite well so we will fight for the place,’’ Rafael added.
“We are very close to each other. We’d have to congratulate the other.“We’re still only very young and always motivate each other whoever is playing. It’s quite a hard situation to be in. We’re both desperate to play but know it would be very disappointing for the other.
“My parents don’t like it very much because they prefer one of us to play on each side rather than the two of us competing for the same position.’’
“I’m probably more aggressive than him whereas he’s calmer than me,’’ said Rafael.
Rafael looked back at his dismissal last year during the match that took Man Utd out of the running.
“I was younger at the time and hope I will never repeat the situation. Sometimes it’s OK to be like that in a match but I’ve learnt a lot since being sent off and I’m much calmer now.”
Rafael received a red card against Tottenham Hotspur in January of this year.
Rafael was asked about Barcelona's David Villa, Lionel Messi and Pedro.
“They are very good players but if we keep our concentration and do what Sir Alex has said we should do, hopefully we can win.’’
“We have very good defenders. If we stick at it together I think we’ll be able to stop Messi.”

Fergie adamently stated that neither he nor United are scared by Lionel Messi.
Although Messi has scored an astonishing 52 goals in Barca's amazing 2010-11 season, Sir Alex is confident that his side can stop Messi from controlling the match at Wembley.
“We’ve played against Barcelona three times with Messi in the team and there’s always a solution to every good player – and we hope we can find a solution on Saturday.
“But you’ve also got to recognise that they have other good players and we have good players, and that is why it’s such an appealing game.
“But I’m sure Barcelona are aware of the threats we can offer, and hopefully that is the case.
“I’ve just got to trust my players that they can perform on Saturday and that makes a difference.
“I know they’ll be ready.”
