Manchester Derby: Manchester United v Manchester City - Tickets

2011 Manchester Derby: Man Utd 1-6 Man City

In front of a sold-out stadium of fans from around the workd, Manchester City earned a shocking 6-1 defeat of their arch-rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, October 23rd, 2011.

After a somewhat slow start, Man City took the lead after 22 minutes with a goal from 21-year old Italian Mario Balotelli. The midfielder marked the goal with humor by lifting his outer shirt to reveal another blue shirt saying, “Why Always Me?”

City was ahead 1-0 at half-time.

Star of the match, Balotelli struck twice. Balotelli also won the free-kick which led to a red card for United defender Jonny Evans leaving United with only ten men. Two goals came from late sub Edin Dzeko. And Sergio Aguero and David Silva each added to the tally.

City boss, Roberto Mancini took off Balotelli with 20 minutes remaining and brought in Edin Dzeko.

City upped their tempo and struck three times after the 88th minute cementing their victory that lifted them five points ahead of United at the top of the Premier League table.

Darren Fletcher scored United’s only goal 10 minutes from time.

City delivered United’s first home defeat since April 2010 – and ended United’s run of 19 consecutive home league wins.

Sir Alex Ferguson said later that the stunning defeat to Manchester City was shocking to him.

United played the majority of the second half with ten men after the dismissal of Jonny Evans.

‘It was out worst ever day. It’s the worst result in my history, ever. Even as a player I don’t think I ever lost 6-1’.

‘I thought with the experience we’ve got – Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra – they would defend more but we just kept attacking. Sometimes there has to be common sense about it’.

Roberto Mancini, City manager, also commented after the match.

“This is only one game. I still think United are one yard above us, still,” said Mancini. “I think we can only change this after we win the title in the end.

“After, maybe it will be different, but now United are better than us.”

The 161st derby, a Premier League fixture, took place on 23 October 2011 at Old Trafford. City’s victory equalized the biggest win in the derby’s history, which City also won at Old Trafford in 1926.

Manchester United won the 2010-11 Premier League Championship and Manchester City earned the 2010-11 FA Cup Trophy.

Both clubs qualified for the 2011–12 UEFA Champions League.

The Manchester Derby is a historic clash between Manchester City and Manchester United. The local derby centres on the City of Manchester and Greater Manchester. Only four miles separate the clubs with City based in east Manchester at the City of Manchester Stadium and United south west of Manchester at Old Trafford Stadium in Trafford.

To date, Manchester United has recorded the most Derby wins - 67, and Ryan Giggs has played in the most Derbies – 34.

As of 23 October 2011, there have been 161 competitive meetings between the teams. United have won 67 and City 44, the remaining 50 games finishing as draws.

The last meeting, the 161st derby, was a Premier League fixture on 23 October 2011 at Old Trafford. City won 6-1, equalling the biggest win in the derby’s history, which City also won 6-1 at Old Trafford in 1926.

Wayne Rooney Scores Supergoal in Manchester Derby, February 2011

Man United won the previous Manchester Derby with a spectacular goal from Wayne Rooney.

Rooney’s 78th minute winner – a powerful acrobatic effort that flashed past Joe Hart on its way home - was Rooney’s best ever goal in his football career.

“As soon as I hit it, I knew it was in, said Rooney. “It’s definitely the best goal I’ve scored.”

Community Shield: Manchester City 2-3 Manchester United

FA Cup winners Manchester City lost to Manchester United in the recent Community Shield – Man City 2-3 Man Utd – at Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday, August 7th.

Manhester United boss, Sir Alex Ferguson has never let slip a two-goal lead in his managerial career.

This match was also a Manchester Derby between the two Manchester superclubs. Trailing 2-0 at the break, United transformed and revitalized after a pep talk from Fergie.

United’s second half goals were scored by Chris Smalling (21) and a brace from Nani (24).

New goalkeeper, David De Gea suffered an ackward debut similar to his predecessors, Peter Schmeichel and Jaap Stam. Edwin van der Sar is a hard act to follow, however De Gea need more time to adjust to England football.

“This shows who the best team is,” exclaimed Man Utd striker, Wayne Rooney.

“All game we dominated. We never know when a game is finished. We took them apart. The scoreline is deserved. We’re champions and we’re the team to beat. We want to prove that.

“Of course [it is sweeter because it was a derby]. And obviously they are wanting to try and fight us for that title. But I think there was only one team that was going to win. We showed our character to come back.”

“Have to say, I think today was a footballing lesson. A great win for the champions.”

Sir Alex Ferguson's side had an average age of 22 after he withdrew Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Michael Carrick at the half.

“For us, I think it just confirms what I’ve thought,” said Fergie.

“People were saying that we’re not the best United squad, but you’ve got to remember we have a lot of young players, and they will improve.

“These boys are good players and the addition of Jones and De Gea gives us a good future. We are confident with this group of players.”

Wayne Rooney and Sir Alex Ferguson Suffered Harsh Bans by the FA Last Season

Wayne Rooney

Both Wayne Rooney and Sir Alex Ferguson Suffered Harsh Bans by the FA Last Season

Wayne Rooney was banned for two games for his rant into a TV camera while celebrating Man Utd’s victory at West Ham.

Sir Alex Ferguson was banned for five matches and fined £30,000 last season for criticising referee Martin Atkinson after United’s defeat at Chelsea, the latest in a long list of battles he has had with the FA through the years.

Sir Alex Ferguson has now turned the spotlight onto the FA, claiming there was an “unfair focus” on Manchester United.

The Man United boss cited ‘possible resentment about the club because of our success since the Premier League began’.

‘I think that has something to do with it really,’ said Ferguson.

‘It will always be there and I think we know that. I don’t really know whether it’s about me or the club. That’s a difficult one. They have certainly always found a way to treat us differently.

‘It has been happening for a while now and they always seem to find a way to do us when, with others, it’s seemingly forgotten.’

‘Personally, I felt hard-done-by last season but it’s always difficult and I’m not wanting to get involved with it, to be honest,’ said Ferguson.

‘It doesn’t bother me one bit. I defend my club and that’s my job. Part of the problem is that when I make comments, the media are on to the FA right away.

‘Then they feel forced to do something and they are afraid of what might happen if they don’t. There is no consistency in the disciplinary situation. We all know that.’

Fergie Talks About "The Big Six"

Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United Manager

Manchester United boss, Sir Alex Ferguson, believes the upcoming 2011-12 season will be his most challenging campaign ever, calling it a “six-horse race.”

In the past, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United have challenged each other for the Premier League championship.

The Big Four along with Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur have made tremendous steps forward. Man City beat Arsenal to earn third place last season.

Arsenal may loose top stars Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri,

Liverpool have not won the league since 1990, but with King Kenny Dalglish as new boss, Bergie will not underestimate Liverpool.

‘We used to talk about a top four, with ourselves, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool,’ he said. ‘You can’t say that any more.Manchester City have definitely come into the frame. They have a buying power better than the rest of us.

‘Maybe having the run in the European Cup just stretched Tottenham too much last season and they ended up being out of the top four.

‘But you look at those teams and say any one of them could win the league.’

Natasha Giggs Comments About Family Affairs

Natasha Giggs - Mrs. Rhodri Giggs

The love lives of the Giggs brothers, Ryan and Rhodri, have appeared in the headlines this month with revelations of extramarital relations continuing to be revealed - with rumours of a complex string of affairs.

This week has seen Natasha Giggs (wife of Rhodri) take to the floor yet again after the young mother spoke out against her cheating husband with fresh vigour.

Natasha, who confessed to having an eight year affair with her brother in law, has told the press that her husband had been repeatedly unfaithful to her throughout the course of their marriage. She said Rhodri had recently slept with Danielle Healy at a house party.

Angry Natasha announced that Rhodri had no right to complain of her affairs when he had behaved just as badly.

Natasha said she didn’t know whether to “slap her or shake her hand”. She also went on to speak of her husband’s hypocrisy. “He's been acting all innocent, but it seems he's just as bad as me”, she complained. “I can't see how we can ever get back together."

Natasha, who had previously been hiding in Spain, has now returned to the UK.

Her reported former lover Ryan Giggs has also flown back to Britain together with his wife. The two are said to be pursuing marriage counselling in an effort to rebuild their relationship.

Edwin van der Sar has retired as goalkeeper for Man Utd

EDWIN VAN DER SAR

Edwin van der Sar has retired as goalkeeper for Man Utd.

The Dutchman's career culminated with Manchester United's 3-1 loss to FC Barcelona in the 2011 Champions League Final at Wembley.

Superstar goalkeeper, Van der Sar will be hard to replace. There is currently doubt as to whether there is a replacement capable of replicating his composure, consistency and class. Van der Sar's value to the team and to this victorious campaign cannot be overestimated.

Rivals Arsemal and Tottenham's goalkeepers are said to have cost them in their chase to end their silverware droughts - but van der Sar has been a rock for United - stopping opponents dead in their tracks season after season.

He will be dearly missed by Sir Alex Ferguson, his teammates and fans.

Wayne Rooney Reflects on Champions League Final Loss to Barcelona

Man Utd superstar striker, Wayne Rooney reflected on his side's 3-1 defeat at the hands of Barcelona. Manchester United was defeated in the UEFA Champions League final between FC Barcelona and Manchester United FC at Wembley Stadium on May 28, 2011 in London, England.

"It hurt," he said. "I watched the game again because you can always learn by watching football.

"It was very disappointing but you have to put your hands up and say they were the better team.

"They are the best team I’ve seen and Lionel Messi the best player.

"I think he got three nutmegs in the first-half. On my Playstation I can make him do what I want but he’s even better in real life.

"The speed he moves his legs, in fact his whole body, is amazing. Messi wins them games but Xavi and Andres Iniesta destroy you."

The United man also conceded that Barcelona are the team to catch, adding: "They are simply a fantastic team, a very special side.

"That’s the level we want to be at and we have to up our game to achieve this. The manager will be doing what he can to see we do this."

Despite praising Messi, Rooney believes the Argentine might struggle in the Premier League.

"If you bring Xavi and Iniesta with him, yes [he could be a success]. But it would be difficult, almost impossible for him to play as he does in Spain,” he said.

"The game is more physical here, going to the likes of Birmingham and Stoke away is very demanding.

"Cristiano Ronaldo is more suited to the English game than Messi. Cristiano is taller and good in the air."

“I know my players will be ready. The great thing about the last time Manchester United were at Wembley was that it completed Sir Matt’s rebuilding of the team and everyone wanted him to win it. The whole country was behind him. I’m not sure the whole country is behind us now.” _Sir Alex Ferguson
.
“Winning is the only option. I wouldn’t swap my career with anyone’s.”_Ryan Giggs
.
“I had hoped for this beautiful opportunity; that I would be welcomed by my team-mates, just like I am used to in Mexico. I am here and I have to enjoy it, but I also have to work very hard. I am a very lucky man. I know football is not predictable. You can have good days and bad days, like everyone. But attitude, like I said, you have in your own hands, and I hope to do very well.” _Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez
.
“Barcelona are the ultimate. They are what we all look to and want to play like. But our football can be just as good as theirs at times. We have a lot of quality too. Both teams want to go forward and score goals, so I don’t think anyone could ask for a bigger or a better final.” _Paul Scholes
.
“It doesn’t bother us who is favourite and who is not. It is about performing in a one-off game.” _Michael Carrick
.
“Nobody likes running after the ball, it’s very difficult. What we have to do is to try and steal the ball from them as soon as possible. This is the only way for us to score and to avoid them scoring against us, that’s clear.” _Nani
.
“Rooney staying was a big part of what we achieved this season. There was a sense of relief from the players. Wayne is one of the best three players in the world, so to have him on our team-sheet is a bonus.” _Rio Ferdinand
.
FC BARCELONA

“When I saw the Manchester United team two years ago my view, my impression, was it was a strong, strong team. From two years ago and the last four or five games, and the many games I have seen they are strong, they are competitive, each player knows what they have to do. It is an honour to play in the Champions League against Manchester United.” _Pep Guardiola

“I’m not sure where their weaknesses are because they are a very strong side, very physical and extremely efficient in all their lines. I’m one of those players who doesn’t look too much at the opposition and concentrates about what we need to do. This is a one-off game – but we have to think about us.” _Lionel Messi

“Rooney is one of the best strikers in the game. I will have to concentrate hard to not to give him space. It was always difficult playing against him in training as it is with Lionel Messi now.” _Gerard Pique

“Messi is not just a detail, he’s the best player in the world and that’s more than a detail. We have the good fortune to have him on our side and let’s hope we can all help him. That doesn’t mean that, because he is the best player in the world, he is going to decide the game on his own, but it’s an advantage. At the very least, I prefer to have him on my side.” _Javier Mascherano

“We’re confident we will win. We have to be. We’d be nothing without belief. We’ve achieved great things with this team and we know we can win more trophies.” _Xavi Hernandez
